Nigeria’s First Lady and President Muhammadu Buhari’s wife, Aisha Halilu Buhari, was elected to office on May 29, 2015, succeeding former President Goodluck Jonathan. She works as a cosmetologist and beauty therapist. She is a fervent advocate for the rights of women and children. On February 17, 1971, Aisha Buhari was born in the northeastern Nigerian state of Adamawa. Alhaji Muhammadu Ribadu, her grandfather, served as Nigeria’s first defense minister. Aisha’s mother is a member of the prestigious Ankali farming dynasty, and her father was a civil engineer. She studied in Adamawa State for both her primary and secondary education. Aisha Buhari founded and currently serves as managing director of Hanzy Spa in addition to owning Hanzy Beauty Institute, a beauty parlor with locations in Kaduna and Abuja. She participates in the development of the National Basic Technical Education’s (NBTE’s) small-medium enterprise curriculum and serves as a cosmetology and beauty therapy reference person for the organization. Aisha Buhari closed her beauty parlor when her husband was chosen as Nigeria’s president. Aisha’s book Essentials of Beauty Therapy: A Complete Guide for Beauty Specialists has been suggested as a text for the NBTE course of study.

Aisha Buhari is a strong supporter of women’s and children’s rights, and this was a major theme in her husband’s presidential campaign in 2015. She stated in October 2016 that she would not support her husband in the next election unless he regained control of his ministry. “I don’t know which party my wife belongs to, but she belongs to my kitchen, my living room, and the other room,” the president responded.

Controversies

In October 2019, Fatima Daura, the newspaper editor’s daughter, claimed that Aisha had verbally harassed her and harmed her family. Aisha was caught on camera ranting inside the presidential house in Abuja by Fatima, who then made the footage public. Fatima Daura claimed she recorded the video because, if she had made those accusations without evidence, no one would have believed her. Aisha Buhari asserted that she appeared in the video and that Fatima Daura made fun of her as the recording was being made. Then, Aisha apologized via her publicist. After President Buhari ordered Mamman Daura and his family to leave the home, she vented her wrath at them for refusing to let her access several portions of the presidential mansion.
