The FCTA Abuja: What Are Their Functions?

Meaning of FCTA

FCTA is short for Federal Capital Territory Administration. It is a ministry in Nigeria that administers and runs the affair of the Federal Capital Territory. As such, it is composed of secretariats, agencies, departments, and various other units to ensure the smooth running of the Federal Capital Territory. The head of the Federal Capital Territory Administration is the Minister who is elected by the President. And the minister is assisted by the Permanent Secretary, a career civil servant. The current Honorable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Administration as of the time of writing this article is Mallam Muhammed Musa Bello, the Honorable Minister of State is Dr Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu, and the Permanent Secretary is Olusade Adesola.

Who Created The FCTA and When?

Former president of Nigeria, President Olusegun Obasanjo created the Federal Capital Territory Administration on December 31, 2004, after the Ministry of the Federal Capital Territory(MFCT) was scrapped.

Secretariats Under The Federal Capital Territory Administration

FCTA

The Federal Capital Territory Administration has 7 secretariats under it. They are:

Education Secretariat

The mandate of the education secretariat is to ensure that the mission and vision of providing quality education for the residents of the Federal Capital Territory are actualized. The current Secretary for Education of the Education Secretariat is Hon. Sani Dahir El-Katuzu.

Social Development Secretariat

The mandate of the Social Development Secretariat is to protect the rights of women, children, and any vulnerable group in the Federal Capital Territory. The secretariat is in charge of poverty alleviation endeavors for the less privileged people. It is also in charge of promoting culture, arts, and sports in the FCT.

Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat

The mandate of the Agricultural and Rural Development Secretariat is to carry out functions similar to what the Ministry of Agriculture does.

Area Council Services Secretariat

The mandate of the Area Council Services Secretariat is to be the body of apex policy-making and central coordination for activities in the six area councils in Abuja.

Transportation Secretariat

The mandate of the transportation secretariat is to restructure the transport sector of the Federal Capital Territory in line with the Transportation Master Plan of Abuja.

Health and Human Services Secretariat

The health and human services secretariat are charged with the mandate to supervise the health sector of the Federal Capital Territory.

Legal Services Secretariat

The mandate of the legal services secretariat is to handle and oversee all legal services in the Federal Capital Territory.

Agencies in The FCTA

The FCTA has 8 agencies that it is funding. They are Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, Area Councils Services Commission, Federal Capital Territory Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board, Federal Capital Territory Board Of Internal Revenue, Abuja Infrastructure Investment Centre, Abuja Environmental Protection Board, and Federal Capital Territory Muslim Pilgrims Board.
