Nigerian politician, businessman, and economist Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed hails from Kaduna state. From 2003 to 2007, he was a member of the House of Representatives. Early Life & Education
Yassir Datti Baba-Ahmed was born on July 7, 1969, in Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria, into the Baba-Ahmed family. a 33-member family, 22 of them are still living. Over the years, the family has lost its father as well as 11 sons and daughters. Baba-Ahmed, the father of Yusuf Datti Ahmed, was an Arab cattle dealer from Mauritania who eventually rose to prominence as a lecturer and authority on Islamic law.
According to Mahadiyya baba-Ahmed, who is the family’s eldest surviving sister, they were all born either at the Barewa College in Zaria, Kaduna state, or in the family home in Tudun Wada, Zaria. On November 5, 1987, Baba-Ahmed, the father of Yusuf Datti, passed away. He was 95 years old.
Yusuf Datti holds four degrees, including a BSc and MSc in Economics from the University of Maiduguri, an MBA from the University of Wales, Cardiff, and a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Westminster, which he successfully completed in 2006. Career
He spent several years working in business and banking after completing his service in the state of Ogun. He held positions as Officer II at the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company, Lagos, and Projects Coordinator at Baze Research and Data Services Limited. From July 1997 to December 1998 he was a banking officer at First Bank of Nigeria.
He rejoined Baze Research and Data Services Ltd in July 1999 and was appointed the company’s managing director before departing in January 2003 to enter politics. Sen. Yusuf Baba-Ahmed was appointed in 2015 to serve as the chairman of the Board of Trustees (BOT) for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Hope Alive Foundation, which supports corps members who suffered a permanent disability while serving by fostering their post-service economic survival.
Political Career
Baba-Ahmed ran under the banner of the All Nigeria People’s Party in April 2003 for the Federal House of Representatives in the Zaria Federal Constituency, Kaduna State (ANPP). He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2003 and served there from 2007 to 2009.
He was one of the lawmakers who rejected former president Olusegun Obasanjo’s bid for a third term in 2006 during the Obasanjo Administration. Yusuf Datti claimed that unless action was taken to look into claims that members had been paid to support the constitutional amendments required for a third term presidency agenda, he would not seek reelection.
The Nigerian Senate rejected the Constitutional Amendments Bill on May 16, 2006. Obasanjo left office on May 29, 2007, one year later.
In 2007 Baba-Ahmed filed a lawsuit against the Independent National Electoral Commission for the conduct of earlier elections. He returned to his business company after quitting politics. In 2011, he launched Baze University, a private university in Abuja, of which he is currently the provost.
Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed ran for a Senate seat in 2011 and won under the leadership of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), which was then headed by President Muhammadu Buhari. Baba-Ahmed received 366,398 votes in the Kaduna North Senate elections held in April 2011. With 365,043 votes, the incumbent senator from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Ahmed Makarfi, came in second place.
Ahmed Makarfi, a candidate for the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), challenged the election in court. The electoral tribunal reversed Ahmed’s victory, and he resigned from office in 2012.
Sen. Baba-Ahmed campaigned for president in 2019 as part of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), but former vice president Atiku Abubakar defeated him. He withdrew from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primary in 2022, claiming his refusal to buy delegates as the reason, in preparation for the governorship elections in Kaduna State in 2023.
He was selected as the Labour Party’s vice presidential candidate for the 2023 general election in Nigeria on July 8, 2022, the day after his 53rd birthday. At the unveiling ceremony, Peter Obi’s running mate, Yusuf Datti, stated that his commitment to saving Nigeria was the driving force for his choice to accept the nomination.
Baze University
2011 saw the establishment of Baze University by Sen. Yusuf Baba-Ahmed. Private university Baze University is situated in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. The institution provides higher-level, British-quality education. Baba-Ahmed responded that the Nigerian educational system was “appalling” when asked why he started the institution. This served as the impetus for the founding of Baze University, which aims to “contribute to the system’s repair so that Nigeria can realize its potential and address numerous difficulties.”
At the time of writing, the university offered 43 undergraduate degree programs, including those through its faculties of law, business, and social sciences, as well as computing and applied sciences. Currently, Baba-Ahmed serves as the provost of Baze University.
Philanthropy
The talented philanthropist Sen. Yusuf Datti uses his money to benefit society. One of his CSR activities involved the construction and donation of two junior secondary schools with a total enrollment of 4,000 students. It is remarkable that the colleges have already graduated over 6,000 pupils.
