The current chief justice of Nigeria goes by the name Olukayode Ariwoola. He is a justice and jurist in the Supreme Court of Nigeria and he serves as the chief justice of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He previously served as a justice of the Nigerian Courts of Appeal. But in 2011, on December 22, he was designated to the position of the Supreme Court. Olukayode Ariwoola assumed the position of Chief Justice of Nigeria in 2022, June 27th, after the former Chief Justice, Tanko Mohammed, resigned. Olukayode Ariwoola was officially confirmed as Chief Justice on September 21st 2022 by the Nigerian Senate.

Early Life and Education

The current chief justice of Nigeria 2022, Olukayode Ariwoola, was born in 1954 on August 22 in Iseyin, Oyo State. His primary education began in the Local Authority Demonstration School in Iseyin local government area. After that, he went on to the Muslim Modern School from 1968 to 1969 still in the same town before proceeding to Ansar-Ud-Deen Hihgh School in Shaki, Oyo State where he finished his high school education.

Legal Career

The current Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola, attended the University of Ife which is now called Obafemi Awolowo University, in Ile-ife, Osun State. He graduated from the University with a Bachelor’s in Law degree.

In July 1981, he got called to bar and got enrolled as a Solicitor and Advocate at the Supreme Court of Nigeria. Ariwoola’s career started when he became a State Counsel at the Ministry of Justice on the National Youth Service Corps in Akure, Ondo State. After that, he proceeded to the Ministry of Justice in Oyo State as a Legal Officer before he voluntarily left the State Civil Service in 1988 for private service.

In 1989, Olukayode Ariwoola established his firm of legal consultants and practitioners in Oyo State known as Olukayode Ariwoola & Co. But before that, he served as Counsel in Chief Ladosu Ladapo’s Chambers frok October 1988 to July 1989. In November 1992, he was designated a judge of Oyo State Judiciary.

Between 1988 and 1992, he was the chairman of the board of directors of Phonex Motors Ltd. Between May 1993 and September 1996, Ariwoola was the chairman of the Armed Robbery Tribunal during which he got posted out of the Ibadan Headquarters to Saki High Court. Before Ariwoola got elevated to the Supreme Court, he served justice of the Court of Appeal, Enugu, Lagos, and Kaduna divisions.
